The primary stage is not-yet-reached mindfulness.
The middle stage clearly examines and has the awareness.
The next stage is absorbing for correction.
The ultimate stage is bright and splendid.
The practice of meditation has four ranks of achievement. The primary meditation passes on the secondary meditation, and the third meditation to the fourth emptiness of meditation. The dharma sutras of the Shakyamuni Buddha expounded these four ranks in the principles of meditative sitting.
